Psychiatry is an exciting, expanding field. In Sri Lanka, in order to do the selection examination in MD (Psychiatry), the doctor must have completed one year of internship, and a further minimum one year of post-intern work. Following the successful completion of the selection examination in MD (psychiatry), the trainee is eligible to start his training as a registrar in psychiatry. He/she is required to complete a minimum three year training period as a registrar, which includes mandatory and optional clinical appointments, maintenance of a logbook and completion of a casebook.
After completion of the required training and activities, the trainee is eligible to attempt the MD Part II Examination in Psychiatry. Subsequent to the successful completion of the MD Part II Examination, the trainee is required to complete a further two year period as a senior registrar, and a dissertation.
