The intermediate care psychiatry unit at Nilaveli, Trincomalee was officially opened with the participation of the council members of the Sri Lanka College of Psychiatrists, Health Ministry Officials and the regional mental health and administrative professionals on 29.11.2021. It was developed with the fund assistance received through the “Grant assistance for grass root level human security project” which is a fund assistance scheme operated by the Japanese government.

Dr Jayan Mendis played a pivotal role along with Dr Prabath Wickrama, in liaising with the Japanese officials and planning out the project. Thereafter, the construction process was completed under the supervision of Dr Sumudu Godawita, the Consultant Psychiatrist and the provincial and regional directors of health service in Trincomalee. The state of the art unit, consisting of 10 rooms with attached bathrooms, an assessment room and an activity room, fulfils the dire need of a facility for psycho-social rehabilitation of people with mental health problems in Trincomalee District.
